We're back
Well, we're back. Got up at 3 am (midnight west coast time) and flew through Chicago to San Diego. Arrived at 10 am. After yesterdays marathon on Capitol Hill, I am exhausted. Have taken it easy today but tomorrow I have to hustle.
Saturday I am going to speak at a forum for senior citizens and follow that on Monday with a talk to a Rotary club. Have to do some preparation tomorrow.
The Washington event was truly an inspiration. Four hundred and fifty people, most with early Alzheimer's, were there to lobby and learn. I'm constantly amazed at the uplifting message from those suffering from Alzheimer's. They are all so positive and upbeat.
It's a good lesson for all. You don't need to get defeated by this terrible disease. Put on a smile and go out and talk to people.

Don, I am just so proud of you and Jane and all the work you two are doing. I know that it is invigorating to you to see and work with all of these people. Thank you so very much.
You are helping all of us, and I am so inspired by your spirit and willingness to do this. Marty

Don, the comments about management of care facilities (nursing homes) by you and your brother are consistent with many in the pastoral and physician professions. Another Dr. in New York State decided to do something about it and launched The Eden Alternative that established care standards and a protocol based on employees valuing all life they interact with, both residents and staff. Worth a look at www.edenalternative.com In San Diego one facility I'm aware of adopting the Eden Alternative program is Silverado, and they have given it their own name. One requirement is 4 hrs/mo staff training on dementia. I always recommend to my clients that they ask facilities they visit whether they subscribe to The Eden Alternative. If they don't know about it, keep looking.
See you and Jane Sat.

Don,
Glad you're back! I have been reading your blog and am impressed with the information you provide about Alzheimer's. I hope it is okay for me to contact you directly. I have a client who is involved in Alzheimer’s treatment research. They are looking for ways to assist those who help care for someone with Alzheimer’s. As an Alzheimer’s blogger, you cover a variety of concerns to caregivers, but I wondered if there was anything in particular you would like me to share with them.
Specifically, what challenges do you face? What things have helped you the most or what resources and information do you need more of? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.
I will be watching your blog, and you can contact me at dave.schefcik@fleishman.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Dave Schefcik
